Winterize your robot mower: an October 2026 checklist

Prepare the mower, station and cables for winter with a checklist that separates manufacturer instructions from general habits.

Prepare for winter step by step

  1. Identify

Mower, station, power supply and any reference antenna.

  2. Check

Exact manual: charging, cleaning and storage for each component.

  3. Prepare

Clean, inspect and charge according to the applicable instructions.

  4. Store

Protect connections and record the steps for restarting.

Identify the parts before putting anything away

Record the exact mower and station references. A family name is not enough: boundary-wire installations, satellite-reference systems and LiDAR models have different components. Keep the manual nearby and find shutdown, cleaning, battery and storage instructions.

List the mower, station, power supply, any reference antenna, connectors and accessories. Record a storage location and the supporting instruction for each. This avoids treating the entire installation as one device.

Clean and inspect before storage

Switch off the mower according to its instructions before handling it. Remove residue and inspect wheels, blade disc, housing and contacts. Do not borrow a washing method from another model: permitted water use and protected areas must match the manual.

Record damaged parts now, along with consumable references and repairs needed for spring. The aim is not to dismantle assemblies the manufacturer does not identify as user-serviceable.

Battery: avoid a universal charge percentage

Husqvarna specifies a full charge followed by shutdown for the Automower models covered by its storage guide. Some older models need periodic charging. That does not create a universal instruction for every robot mower battery.

Write down the specified charge level and any winter charging interval for your model. Do not remove a battery solely because a general internet tip suggests it. Follow the exact procedure and have damage checked before further use.

Station and cables: the GARDENA example

GARDENA recommends a dry, frost-free indoor space for the mower, ideally also bringing in the station and transformer. Boundary and guide wires can remain installed; their ends need protection from moisture.

The support page gives a different arrangement when the station cannot come indoors, keeping it connected as instructed. Do not combine conflicting procedures. Check the manual for the exact SILENO, especially when a listing groups different generations.

Worked example: preparing the Sunseeker S4

For the European S4 RMR1001M20V, the manual calls for a full charge followed by switching off before storage. Winter storage must be dry and frost-free. Clean with the mower switched off and without a pressure washer; pay attention to wheels, camera and station. Replace blades and screws together following the manufacturer procedure.

This preparation answers practical questions: is the room suitable, is grass stuck to the wheels, are consumables available and is the station clean? Read printed pages 21–24 of the English manual instead of generic lithium battery advice. Charging temperatures must not be confused with storage conditions.

Prepare maps and spring startup now

Record component positions and useful settings before moving an installation. Husqvarna treats EPOS reference stations separately and notes that moving one can require rebuilding virtual boundaries. That does not apply automatically to every wire-free mower.

In spring, check condition, connections, maps and no-go zones, then supervise the first outing. If the yard has changed, treat startup as an installation check rather than just pressing start.

Use the checklist when comparing a purchase

Before buying, consider where the mower can be stored, which components need moving and how to obtain consumables. Reviews can reveal reported difficulties, but maintenance procedures should come from official documentation.

The linked GARDENA SILENO Minimo page concerns a specific US reference. Its owner experiences do not describe every SILENO. Matching the model, manual and region is more reliable than applying generic winter advice.
