LiDAR or RTK: choosing a robot mower for trees, narrow paths and slopes
For a garden with trees, check sky visibility, access routes and slopes before looking at the advertised lawn area. A mower can have enough capacity yet struggle with one passage between a house and a hedge. This guide separates manufacturer statements from our suggested selection process. It is not a hands-on test of these three machines, and European product specifications should not be assumed to describe similarly named US offers.

Under trees: identify the difficult location
Husqvarna identifies dense tree groups and narrow passages as places where satellite reception can weaken for its EPOS systems. That does not establish that every RTK mower will fail in your garden. Our suggestion is to sketch the covered areas and photograph the view of the sky from each difficult location. Two isolated trees are a different situation from a long passage beneath overlapping branches. Ask the seller to assess that plan for the exact model generation. A broad assurance about lawn size is less useful than an answer addressing the hardest part of the route.
Consider LiDAR where an RTK antenna is inconvenient
Dreame describes the A1 Pro as using LiDAR without an RTK station, alongside zone management. We therefore consider it worth shortlisting where finding an antenna position is difficult. This is an editorial inference, not a promise of reliable operation under every canopy. Record roots, movable furniture, fallen leaves and unclear boundaries. During a demonstration, request a complete journey through those locations, a return to the charging base and resumed mowing. A straight run across an open lawn would leave your main question unanswered. Judge the proposed installation by that complete routine rather than a single successful movement.
Measure narrow paths at their tightest point
ECOVACS advertises a 0.7 m passage for the GOAT O600 RTK and labels it a laboratory result affected by terrain and other conditions. Measure usable clearance at wheel level, including edging and plants in their normal positions. Also record bends, length and thresholds. Our checklist treats a passage as its own buying requirement: ask whether the machine can travel through it, mow within it and exit in both directions. A narrow straight run and a twisting corridor are different tasks. Never transfer the claimed clearance of another GOAT or Navimow to the exact model being considered.
Slopes: a 45% grade is not 45 degrees
Dreame lists a maximum grade of 45%, approximately 24°, for the A1 Pro. A 45% grade means a rise of 45 cm over one horizontal metre; the same ratio applies in inches or feet. Measure the steepest climb, turning areas and the lower lawn edge separately. We suggest presenting all three to the seller instead of reporting one average slope. A published maximum does not describe every turn or your wet ground. Request a demonstration within the manual's limits that reflects the actual route. Completing an uphill run alone does not establish suitability for a full mowing cycle.
Check connectivity and regional variants separately
Husqvarna distinguishes corrections supplied through a reference station from those through its Cloud network; the latter requires continuous Internet access. This EPOS requirement is not automatically an O600 requirement. Ask which functions on your chosen mower use Internet, Bluetooth or an optional cellular service. Segway lists i208 LiDAR and i208 AWD as separate European products. Check the complete suffix, included accessories and intended country. A similarly named US listing does not validate European hardware or service terms. Keep the exact product page open in the comparison and resolve recurring-service questions before a discount becomes the deciding factor.
Build a shortlist around your own constraints
Our suggested order is to eliminate unsuitable passages first, assess terrain second, then compare navigation and the time available for mowing. Add a sketch, measurements and maintenance expectations to your notes. Compare the A1 Pro, O600 RTK and i208 LiDAR against those requirements rather than forcing a universal winner. On each Amazon offer, check the full model name, seller, package contents and displayed return options. If an essential detail remains unknown, keep it as an unanswered question. Missing information should never become an assumed advantage. This approach also makes your decision easier to revisit when packages or prices change.
