LiDAR stands for Light Detection and Ranging. A sensor emits a laser beam, measures return time and derives a distance. By scanning, the robot builds a map of the garden, which is what lets it run without a boundary cable.
Why LiDAR matters
LiDAR removes the need for a reference antenna: unlike RTK it does not depend on satellite reception, so it works under tree cover where RTK degrades.
LiDAR limits
Positioning depends on visible features. On a perfectly uniform open lawn it can struggle. The sensor often sits high, and its field of view can be blocked by tall vegetation.
